Storm Goretti LIVE updates as amber weather warnings issued with snow, wind and rain set to batter UK

Heavy snow, rain and fierce winds are set to batter the UK as Storm Goretti arrives. Seven yellow weather warnings have been issued across the UK for today (January 8), plus two more severe amber alerts.

The Met Office has described Goretti, named by the French meteorological service, as a 'multi-hazard event'. Up to 30cm of snow could fall in some parts of the country, including the Peak District, with wet and windy weather also expected.

Parts of Greater Manchester are covered by a yellow weather warning for snow, which comes into force at 5pm and lasts until midday tomorrow (Friday). It covers parts of Bury, east Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport and Tameside.

The warning also covers areas around the Pennines, Midlands and much of Wales. A separate yellow warning for snow covers parts of Devon, while a more severe amber warning is in force from 8pm tonight until 9am tomorrow in parts of the Midlands and Wales.

In these areas, the Met Office is warning of 'dangerous travelling conditions'. Another amber warning is also in force in parts of Cornwall for very strong winds, from 5pm to 11pm today, with other parts of the South West covered by a yellow warning for wind.

Other yellow weather warnings have been issued for rain in parts of South Wales and eastern England, while a warning has been issued for ice in Northern Ireland, and snow and ice across Scotland, north Cumbria and parts of Northumberland. The Met Office says rain will spread north-eastwards from this afternoon, before 'transitioning to snow fairly widely overnight and into Friday'.

A Met Office spokesperson added: "There is some uncertainty over the exact track of Storm Goretti, which will influence the locations most likely to see disruptive snow. Amounts of snow will also depend quite heavily on both elevation and the intensity of precipitation, and as this becomes somewhat lighter into Friday this will lead to an awkward mix of rain, sleet and snow, gradually clearing away to the east. Therefore there is likely to be a lot of variation, even over relatively short distances."
